Among John’s consulting and advisory assignments are strategy and implementation work in New York, Hartford, Houston, Puerto Rico, Riyadh, Al-Khobar, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta, Dublin, and Luxembourg; retail banking strategy and detailed implementation including selling skills, sales management, customer service training at First Citizens, Trinidad; management assessment, planning, facilitation, problem solving in New York and USA, Hong Kong, London, Dublin, Geneva, and Saudi Arabia; and management and team building in Belgium, Indonesia. He recently completed credit culture, risk process, policy, and reviews in Portland, Oregon with USBancorp Equipment Finance; Los Angeles; New York with US Trust; Newark; and prior similar work in Washington, Boston, Stamford, Hartford, Houston, and Riyadh. He is currently assisting International Bank of Azerbaijan to open a New York representative office. He also worked on department management and productivity (New York); family business ownership crisis (New York); privately held businesses (New York, Saudi Arabia, Yonkers); private equity portfolio problem analysis and recovery management (New York); investment process (Saudi Arabia); compliance and executive management (London); regional background and strategy (Vienna); risk management presentation to bankers (Sao Paulo); target markets and client relationship management (New York and USA, Asia); and management structure (UNICEF USA).
John’s training engagements include credit and risk management for Citigroup – Global Trade Services – 12 sessions USA and worldwide and Standard Chartered Bank (Taiwan). Previous training involved Bank of Bermuda, Commerz Bank, Deutsche Bank, Rabobank, Bank of New York – Inter Maritime Bank, Far East National Bank, First City Texas, Burgan Bank (Kuwait), Arab National Bank, United Saudi Commercial Bank, Saudi Hollandi Bank – 40% ABN Amro), Saudi Cairo Bank and Citigroup – Analyzing Financial Institutions. Other training is consultative selling skills and sales management (Trinidad, Paris, Geneva, Luxembourg, Bangkok, Indonesia, Riyadh); management skills (New York, Bali, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Jordan); private banking and wealth management (Luxembourg, London, Bermuda); risk management, risk audits, executive management (The World Bank in Singapore, Cambodia, Ethiopia, and throughout People’s Republic of China); and client relationship management (New York, Riyadh, Singapore, Hong Kong).
His executive coaching clients include JPMorgan Chase, Brown Brothers Harriman, Orix USA, Rabobank, Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of New York – Inter Maritime Bank (Geneva), Boehringer Ingelheim, and Neighborhood Housing Services of New York with 5 CEOs, 2 CFOs; regional, department, and country heads; sales managers; attorneys; and many individuals.
John founded Grammer and Co. in New York City 26 years ago, following 17 years at Citibank as relationship manager - department head (Jeddah), operations head (Beirut), regional training center head (Manila), country credit officer (Rio de Janeiro), regional leasing credit officer (New York), corporate bank head and periodically acting country head (Taipei) and 2 years at the United Nations (Beirut). He lived in Germany, Lebanon (3 times), Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Brazil plus consulting, coaching, training engagements in 52 countries.
John has a Harvard College AB 1957 and a Columbia University MIA 1963. He was Adjunct Professor of International Management and Finance at Columbia University Graduate School of International and Public Affairs 1986-89 and taught university – graduate courses in Brazil, Taiwan, Philippines. He is a board member of Episcopal Social Services, Near East Foundation, Turtle Bay Music School, and the Alumni Council of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia.
